A long night

It's a beatiful Sunday morning, but my two boys are both sleeping, so I'm inside too. Adam and I both got food poisoning yesterday from a shared plate of super-delux nachos at a divy Mexican restaurant, so it was a long night. I think we switched beds several times (me in guest room, him on couch; me in master bedroom, him on couch; both of us in master bedroom; he moving to guest room). I think we took turns hurling all night too.

Unfortunately Micah, who was sleeping really soundly from 7 pm until 6:30 am until about a month ago, has hit a streak where he now is crying every hour or so from 2 until 6. Anyone have thoughts on a solution to this? Is this just a growth spurt thing? I've been trying to let him cry it out, but eventually one of us will cave in and put the pacifier back in his mouth, which puts him back to sleep immediately. This morning I caved in and actually tried to feed him at 5, but he wasn't really hungry. I put the pacifier back in and he slept until 6:45. I know he needs to learn to fall back to sleep on his own, but it is hard to listen to the crying at 3 am when the pacifier will buy another hour or two of uninterrupted sleep.

  1. Could be teething. Try a half-dose of Motrin the first time he awakes and you'll see how he responds afterwards. If he sleeps then it's probably teething. If not, then probably a growth spurt. Although first teeth are supposed to appear month 8-9, our little guy started at month 6 and last week cut his third tooth already. The other one has yet to cut a single tooth.

  2. I'm thinking teething or sleep patterns (ie out of REM sleep, back into whatever it is). How's his day sleeps going? If the pacifier is what he wants, my friend taught me a trick where you attach a short piece of ribbon onto the neckline of the pj's (or sleeping bag) which you attach the pacifiier to - and you then teach bub to find the ribbon and they'll find the pacifier themselves. Obviously we're talking a short bit of ribbon here as we don't want bubs to strangle themselves, so just long enough from where it's attached to the clothing to the mouth. Both our guys have fully ditched the pacifier and are self soothing by sucking whatever it is they can reach, including the others foot during the day.

  3. Food poisoning sucks! The worst is when you both are sick and have only one bathroom. Been there, done that. No, thanks!

Can't help on the crying baby situation. No experience with that...yet. Good luck and get well soon!

  4. I was going to suggest teething and motrin also. We use to have like six pacifiers in the crib in hopes they would find one! And if he knows how to put it in his mouth, then don't do it for him in the middle of the night, just put it in his hand, so he can do it himself - work on that during the day too! Hope you are feeling better!

  5. Good suggestions on the pacis, Heather, I'll try that. I think teething is the culpret for the mid-night wakings, though. He's getting one, possibly 2 teeth. Last night I heard him whimpering at 10 when I was going to bed and gave him some homeopathic teething drops; he slept like a charm until 7 am!
